Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine to highlight upcoming releases we're anxiously awaiting! This week I am waiting on....

Gabriel Merrick plays with fire. Literally.

Sometimes he can even control it. And sometimes he can’t. Like the fire that killed his parents.

Gabriel has always had his brothers to rely on, especially his twin, Nick. But when an arsonist starts wreaking havoc on their town, all the signs point to Gabriel. Only he’s not doing it.

More than Gabriel’s pride is at stake -- this could cost him his family, maybe his life. And no one seems to hear him. Except a shy sophomore named Layne, a brainiac who dresses in turtlenecks and jeans and keeps him totally off balance. Layne understands family problems, and she understands secrets. She has a few of her own.

Gabriel can’t let her guess about his brothers, about his abilities, about the danger that’s right at his heels. But there are some risks he can’t help taking.

The fuse is lit…

I LOVED  Storm(Book #1) so much.I CANNOT wait for this.I heard it's on Netgalley so you can bet your bottom dollar that I'm going to request it.If you haven't read Storm you really should! (See my review of Storm )
I'm actually offering a choice between a  pre-order of Spark and a ecopy of Storm for my 500 Followers Giveaway.

In the future, only one rule will matter: Don’t. Ever. Peek.

Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed--arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die.

Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she’s been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she’s falling for him. But Ari isn’t just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention. She’s a military legacy who’s been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know--especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

Sounds good..No?

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING ON?

Interview with Brigid Kemmerer ( author of Storm)

Today I have the author of Storm,
Brigid Kemmerer answer some questions...

                    by Brigid Kemmerer
Earth, Fire, Air, Water – they have more power than you dream.

Ever since her ex-boyfriend spread those lies about her, Becca Chandler is suddenly getting all the guys—all the ones she doesn't want. Then she saves Chris Merrick from a beating in the school parking lot. Chris is different. Way different: he can control water—just like his brothers can control fire, wind, and earth. They’re powerful. Dangerous. Marked for death.

And now that she knows the truth, so is Becca.

Secrets are hard to keep when your life’s at stake. When Hunter, the mysterious new kid around school, turns up with a talent for being in the wrong place at the right time, Becca thinks she can trust him. But then Hunter goes head-to-head with Chris, and Becca wonders who’s hiding the most dangerous truth of all.

The storm is coming . . .

Describe the book in one word/sentence.

Um, one word would be the title. :-)

One sentence? The story of a girl who becomes entangled with four brothers and their battle with those who want them dead.

What influences and inspirations (both literary and non-literary) did you draw from while writing Storm?

All right, I'll be straight out honest: I read a lot of books that no one would consider a classic. You should hear my husband's mockery of my reading pile. (Seriously now. There's nothing wrong with reading fluff.)  But I read a lot of great stuff, too: Simone Elkeles, Charlaine Harris, JR Ward, Sophie Kinsella. "Can You Keep A Secret" is one of my favorite books ever. I love books that are fun or funny or dangerous or adventurous -- but that have a core of humanity. I strive for that in my own writing.

As far as non-literary inspiration, if I'm feeling blocked in my writing, I'll go look for amateur choreography on YouTube. Here's an example of what I mean:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CohKdWx4g4M

I have no idea why that works for me, but there you have it.

Who is your favorite character in this book, and why?
I can't pick a favorite! I love them all. It would be like picking a favorite child.

What books/genres do you read when you have the chance? Any must read authors or series?
I read a lot of contemporary and paranormal YA, and a lot of women's fiction and chick-lit. Sophie Kinsella is an auto-buy for me. (I just read "I've Got Your Number" and it's another of my favorite books.) I read JR Ward and I've been reading Laurell K Hamilton since I was in high school. I love Simone Elkeles and Kim Harrington and I'm so excited about Sarah Fine's series that's coming this fall, because she's so frigging badass talented that I'm going to buy everything she writes.

One song stuck in your head
I guess  "Back in Time" by Pitbull

Do you have a favorite scene or line from Storm ?
There's a scene on the soccer field, when Becca goes to confront Chris and his brothers, that makes me smile every time.

Tell us five interesting things about yourself.

  1.  I'm adopted.
  2. I met my husband on the phone. We both worked in IT (I was a trainer, he was a tech), and we hit it off immediately. I talked to him on the phone for months before I ever met him in person. I knew he was the one as soon as I laid eyes on him.
  3. My day job is very corporate, and when people heard I wrote (and sold!) a novel, no one believed it was teen paranormal.
  4.  When I was writing STORM, my life was plagued with water problems. The basement flooded TWICE. The bay window in my living room kept leaking, and almost fell off the side of the house. The kitchen sink developed a leak and destroyed the floor underneath it. I could go on.
  5. I know more about cars than my husband.

Some questions regarding the sequel(NO SPOILERS of any book..)

Can you shed some light (any light) on what we can expect from Spark [THROW the dying fans a bone please!]
Hmm. Michael meets someone special...

One teaser line/Favorite line from Spark?
"Life would be so much easier if Michael was an idiot."

Is there going to be a book about Nick?I really liked him in Storm and am actually more interested in HIS book than Hunters..
Well...this is a good question. There's a lot of Nick in Spark. I talked it over with my editor, and we agreed that it could seem really repetitive to do Nick's story right after Gabriel's. Don't worry -- there's a LOT of Nick in Hunter's story, too.

After Spark, what? [Expected Publication Book #3 ,Any other projects etc.]
Spirit is coming out June 2013 in the US. I do have a few new projects under my hat...

Is Chris and Becca's relationship going to progress in Spark? They will be secondary characters?
Yes, their relationship progresses, but they are secondary characters.

Spark is from Gabriel's Point of View only?
Both Gabriel and Layne, a new character. I'll stick with the alternating boy/girl POV for the whole series.

THANK YOU SO MUCH BRIGID FOR TAKING THE TIME TO ANSWER ALL MY QUESTIONS :)

About the author:
Brigid Kemmerer was born in Omaha, Nebraska, though her parents quickly moved her all over the United States, from the desert in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to the lakeside in Cleveland, Ohio, and several stops in between, eventually settling near Annapolis, Maryland. Brigid started writing in high school, and her first real “novel” was about four vampire brothers causing a ruckus in the suburbs. Those four brothers are the same boys living in the pages of The Elemental Series, so Brigid likes to say she’s had four teenage boys taking up space in her head for the last seventeen years. (Though sometimes that just makes her sound nuts.) WEBSITE

THIS BOOK IS AWESOME!
If this book is in your bookstore .BUY IT! I swear you will not regret it!
I loved this book so much that even though this book wasn't below $10 in Book Depository I'm offering a KINDLE VERSION in my 500 followers giveaway!

Review:The Hunt

The Hunt (The Hunt #1)
Don’t Sweat. Don’t Laugh. Don’t draw attention to yourself. And most of all, whatever you do, do not fall in love with one of them.

Gene is different from everyone else around him. He can’t run with lightning speed, sunlight doesn’t hurt him and he doesn’t have an unquenchable lust for blood. Gene is a human, and he knows the rules. Keep the truth a secret. It’s the only way to stay alive in a world of night—a world where humans are considered a delicacy and hunted for their blood.

When he’s chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene’s carefully constructed life begins to crumble around him. He’s thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible—and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions about his true nature are growing. Now that Gene has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever—but is it worth the cost of his humanity?

Note:  Younger Readers cautioned due to violence and pretty gruesome scenes

My Thoughts:
As soon as I saw the word "vampire" I started predicting what was going to happen in the book even before I picked it up  but fortunately, all my predictions did not come true.Andrew Fukuda puts a pretty unique twist on the vampire lore.Unlike most novels in which vampires are shown as misunderstood and have a chance of redemption, in this novel vampires are plain evil and will not hesitate to kill humans.I know this isn't exactly a unique twist but it's been a long time since I've read a novel in which vampires are the BAD GUYS (period). The last novel I read in which vampires were scary and to be feared was Glass Houses (Morganville Vampires series) and even though I didn't enjoy this book as much as that one I did think it was different.

The story starts off a little slow and but picks up as soon as the main character gets selected to be in The Hunt begins (so hang in there!)

I was at the edge of my seat when Gene had his 'close calls'  to being discovered and I couldn't put it down. There were a lot of places where I was disgusted with Gene but I understood his need for survival.

I think the major problem I had with the book is the fact that I wasn't a huge fan of the main character. Some of his decisions made no sense to me and even though I understood his need to be  constantly on alert and aloof  .There were times when I thought he was being too selfish and if it hadn't been for one thing(NO SPOILERS) I'm pretty sure I would have hated him.

I liked the world building and I loved the ending! [Did not see that coming]
I think the best part about the book was the fact that I couldn't predict what would happen so the author kept me on my toes.

Overall,If you're looking for a book in which vampires are the bad guys this book is perfect for you.I was pretty shocked by the ending so I'm most probably going to pick up the next book.

My Rating:

3/5

Interesting.

Source:Netgalley(HARLEQUIN UK YOU ARE MADE OF AWESOME!)

My Thoughts:

Let me state the fact that I've only read half of Blood Bound(Book #1 in the series) so I can easily vouch for the fact that this book can be read as a standalone novel. You might get a little confused but you can easily enjoy this novel even if you haven't read book 1.

For those people who've read Book #1 Cam and Liv aren't primary characters in this book but that doesn't mean that they aren't there. They have a role to play.

Let's talk characters

Kori
This woman is freakishly strong.MENTALLY. All those people who love reading books with strong female characters that don't whine PICK THIS BOOK UP NOW!She might not be freakishly strong but she can fight and she's smart. She's also willing to go to any lengths to take care of her family.A trait I really admire.Sometimes she came off as a little to hard but I'm willing to let it slide because she's been through a lot.
She reminds me  of Angelina Jolie in all those action films..

Ian
While Kori comes off as the tough guy  girl. Ian comes off as the sensitive guy with a tough side.He compliments Kori so completely.I hate to draw comparisons but Ian and Kori are like an older Katniss and Peeta (Peeta being more mean and a little edgier).I really liked him and I loved the fact that we could get a peak into what he was thinking.

Let's talk about the Story
Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen Rachel Vincent would throw a curve-ball and change the game. This book is told from both Ian's and Kori's point of view.It took a little bit of time to get used to this but it wasn't very confusing.
I can easily give this book a 5 but due to a few things,
  • The violence and the amount of physical abuse Kori went through really upset me.[Which is exactly why this book is adult]
  • Kori's sister really annoyed me.
  • The ending.SPOILER  wanted her to kill you know the person she didn't kill in the end. That is one decision I know will bite them in the ass Spoiler ends

Overall, this was a great book by Rachel Vincent and I cannot wait to read more by her!

My Rating:

4.5/5

Rachel Vincent doesn't disappoint!

My Thoughts:

I loved this book.

As soon as I saw that there were 4 HOT GUYS (actually 5 if you count Michael ) in this book  I was in but I also had this sinking feeling in my gut because I knew this was too good to be true...

Assumptions that I had made before reading this book...

  • Becca has 'feelings' for all four guys and all 4 guys will be fighting for her love
  • 4 hot guys is just a ploy ..It'll actually just focus on 1 or 2 hot guys and the others will just be in the background ,barely noticeable
  • 2 brothers start developing feelings for Becca .One will hate her and one will openly go after her.Hunter will add to the mix
  • Becca will be a lame girl falling prey to her hormones and will jump on any of the four guys who fancies her.
I am happy to say that NONE my assumptions came true.NONE.

All the characters were fleshed out and I'm happy to say that all 5 HOT GUYS have a role to play in this book and their presence was felt.Usually if there's more than one guy in a book it turns out to be a love triangle or square but even though there's a love triangle in this one it doesn't seem forced and I got a good look at all 4 brothers and Hunter.I feel as if I actually know all of them .

Chris,Gabriel,Nick and Michael are the Merrick brothers. Each brother has a power connected to one of the elements.(Cool right!?). Hunter is the new kid who may or may not be hiding something and has caught Becca's eye .Even though Chris was the main  character ...I think out of all the guys I liked Nick best.I can't explain it I just did.

Becca as a main character was someone I really liked. She did not jump on anyone and didn't fall into the arms of any of the HOT guys around .(Even though I would have) She's been through some stuff and it broke my heart a little bit when I found out what had happened to her.Even though sometimes you feel as if she should do something.. her hands are tied. She's caught up in something that she can't get out of and she needs help.I liked her .There were parts when I admired her too.

Chris is one character I liked a lot. Some chapters are told from his point of view (LOVE!!!).I wanted to read more and more about him.I want to read more about all of the characters(even Becca) . I'm glad that this is the first book in the series.

I also loved the supernatural aspect of the novel. I've always wanted to read a book in  which people could control the elements and Storm was a dream come true! Imagine a family who can control different elements. What would happen if they all lost their temper at the same time? And what would happen if they started to fight? Brigid (the author) is awesome enough to answer some of the questions I just asked in the novel..

I found this idea to be pretty unique.

When I finished this novel all I could think was WHAT? IT'S OVER? BUT I WANT MORE!!!

After I finished the preview of Spark all I could think was I NEED MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overall, this is one book you need to read.It is made of AWESOME! Brigid Kemmerer BOOK #2 better come out quick! I find it hard to believe that this book is by a 2012 debut author.

My Rating:
5/5
