My thoughts on Divergent

I usually give a star rating to the books I read but I have VERY mixed feelings about these books.I didn't hate them and I didn't like them either. These books cannot be tagged as 2stars/3stars etc. These are NOT negative reviews. These are my thoughts.....

Divergent (Divergent #1)
 Blurb:
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

My Thoughts:

Well... I was disappointed.EVERY SINGLE PERSON I FOLLOW gave this book a beyond awesome rating! So you can say that my expectations were sky high .I did not think this is the best book ever written. This might have had something to do with the fact that I'm not a huge fan of Tris.

My problem with Tris is the fact that she wasn't listening to people around her! What is up with that?  but... I did like the fact that she was tough!

My other problem with this book is WHY?
WHY do they want to rule? What on earth is the signaficance of Divergents ?Apart from being a little different from  the others?
Also,WHY on earth is Four interested in Tris?( This has been explained in the book I just don't think the explanation is good enough because Four is MINE!!!!)

Apart from the problems I had above (If you can make sense of them )

This book had a LOT of positives too!

It had a character called Four......

I LOVE THIS GUY!!!!
absolutely looooooooove him!!!

This quote <3

“You think my first instinct is to protect you. Because you're small, or a girl, or a Stiff. But you're wrong."
He leans his face close to mine and wraps his fingers around my chin. His hand smells like metal. When was the last time he held a gun, or a knife? My skin tingles at the point of contact, like he's transmitting electricity through his skin.
"My first instinct is to push you until you break, just to see how hard I have to press." he says, his fingers squeezing at the word break. My body tenses at the edge in his voice, so I am coiled as tight as a spring, and I forget to breathe.”
The guy has no problem letting the girl take care of her problems! He only intervenes when there is no other choice because he realizes that Tris does not need constant protection!

The other great thing about this book is that it leaves a BIG impact.... Usually I forget a lot of things about a book after like 6 months but I remember almost everything about this book especially the world and the characters even though it's almost been a year since I read it!

So all in all I think this book is well written ... It did not live up to the hype for me but I thought it was a pretty good book and I'm more than willing to read Book #2 i.e Insurgent, if there's more of Four in it!

Expected publication: May 1st 2012

I really liked this review of Divergent.I think the paragraph in which I say  WHY  a lot  .. portrays the the sentiment  that Wendy wrote in the 3rd para! ( I would have just linked to her review before instead of trying to write anything if I'd seen it before writing THIS!)

  1. That quote gave me chills... literally! I'm in the category of absolutely loving this book. I could see what you meant by not really caring about Tris. I admired her but I could see why she could be an unlikable character. As for, not knowing why they live like they do. I think that since we the readers see it in the POV of Tris, we wouldn't know the why. I think they are purposely not educated about the why. Hopefully those answers will be given to us later. I love reading reviews that has me pondering about previous books and has me putting in my 2 cents. So, NICE REVIEW! :D

    1. You're right! I hope we get to know more about the why later and there's no unnecessary drama between Tris and Four (Fingers crossed)

  2. Glad I'm not the only one with mixed feelings regarding Divergent! With all the epic reviews I'd read, maybe my expectations were set too high. I dunno. But, like the Pledge, I was kinda disappointed.

While it's understood that not everyone share's the same taste in literature, I do wish people wouldn't be so quick to jump on the *hype* bandwagon.

Then again, being an avid fan of dystopian, books like The Hunger Games have set my personal bar pretty high lol

  3. I understand. I liked this book but I read it just as it came out and hadn't read any reviews of it beforehand. I think it sucks when you hype something up so much that it couldn't possibly be as good as everyone is making it out to be. I'm glad you did see some good points in it too, though!

  4. I always have such a hard time reading over-hyped books. Many times, they leave me disappointed. This was one I adored and I can't wait for the next in the series but I completely understand where you're coming from. Next one, huh? :)

  5. I think your totally right about the mixed feelings thing about this book! Like freaky how you're so right... I also didn't like Tris at times, but liked her bravery. I also don't like the reason why Four likes her... He seems so awesome! I think the book could have been better if it was more explanatory. The whole thing of how Divergents are more hated is kind of lame, but then again, Iv'e tried to write many books before and it's hard to make something really bad happen that entertaining without making it cheesy. Know what I mean? So I give the author props for trying , but it could have been better.
