Review:The Hunt

The Hunt (The Hunt #1)
Don’t Sweat. Don’t Laugh. Don’t draw attention to yourself. And most of all, whatever you do, do not fall in love with one of them.

Gene is different from everyone else around him. He can’t run with lightning speed, sunlight doesn’t hurt him and he doesn’t have an unquenchable lust for blood. Gene is a human, and he knows the rules. Keep the truth a secret. It’s the only way to stay alive in a world of night—a world where humans are considered a delicacy and hunted for their blood.

When he’s chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene’s carefully constructed life begins to crumble around him. He’s thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible—and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions about his true nature are growing. Now that Gene has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever—but is it worth the cost of his humanity?

Note:  Younger Readers cautioned due to violence and pretty gruesome scenes

My Thoughts:
As soon as I saw the word "vampire" I started predicting what was going to happen in the book even before I picked it up  but fortunately, all my predictions did not come true.Andrew Fukuda puts a pretty unique twist on the vampire lore.Unlike most novels in which vampires are shown as misunderstood and have a chance of redemption, in this novel vampires are plain evil and will not hesitate to kill humans.I know this isn't exactly a unique twist but it's been a long time since I've read a novel in which vampires are the BAD GUYS (period). The last novel I read in which vampires were scary and to be feared was Glass Houses (Morganville Vampires series) and even though I didn't enjoy this book as much as that one I did think it was different.

The story starts off a little slow and but picks up as soon as the main character gets selected to be in The Hunt begins (so hang in there!)

I was at the edge of my seat when Gene had his 'close calls'  to being discovered and I couldn't put it down. There were a lot of places where I was disgusted with Gene but I understood his need for survival.

I think the major problem I had with the book is the fact that I wasn't a huge fan of the main character. Some of his decisions made no sense to me and even though I understood his need to be  constantly on alert and aloof  .There were times when I thought he was being too selfish and if it hadn't been for one thing(NO SPOILERS) I'm pretty sure I would have hated him.

I liked the world building and I loved the ending! [Did not see that coming]
I think the best part about the book was the fact that I couldn't predict what would happen so the author kept me on my toes.

Overall,If you're looking for a book in which vampires are the bad guys this book is perfect for you.I was pretty shocked by the ending so I'm most probably going to pick up the next book.

My Rating:

3/5

Interesting.

  4. You actually couldn't figure out what was going to happen at the end of a YA book? About vampires? Really? That is amazing. I have had The Hunt on the "read me" radar for a while, but I have been hesitant because it was another vamp book. Sounds to me like I should lose my hesitation! Thanks for your review.

  5. I am meaning to pick this book up. I kept comparing this one with dark inside by jeyn roberts. It plot line sounds similar though. So, I have been contemplating for a while to which I'm going to choose. I guess I have my pick done! thanks

  7. The Hunt has been on my radar for a while. Reason being, to me it seems like the plot is a unique one in the YA world. Having to live among vampires that are actually vampires (ie:They KILL humans without compunctions) without being detected so that you don't become Snack #2 for the day? Yeah, that would stink in a major way. It is disappointing to hear that the lead protagonist kinda sucks. That makes me sad. I still think I will check it out, if only for those cringe worthy moments! Thanks so much for your review!
