Anew: Character Interview + GIVEAWAY

Today I have Gabriel and Tristan from Anew on the blog to answer some questions.

So...what can you tell me about your book,Anew?

GABRIEL: Anew is our story. Well, it's really more Scarlet's story than anything else. You see, Scarlet has this dying-and-coming-back-to-life problem, but for some reason she's just come back to life with amnesia. Which is weird. And awkward.  But it's actually making things easier for Tristan. Right? (looks at Tristan)
TRISTAN
: (glares at his twin) I wouldn't call anything about my situation easy. I'm cursed, Gabe. We all are.
GABRIEL:
Yeah, but Scarlet not remembering you is a good thing...right?
TRISTAN:
If by 'good' you heartbreaking and unfair then, yes, Scarlet's memory loss is a good thing.
GABRIEL:
(frowns) Why are you always so dark and tormented, dude?
TRISTAN:
Why are you always so damn perky?
GABRIEL:
(moves on with a sigh) Essentially the curse works like this: When Scarlet is dead, I can't love or be loved by anyone else. I'm sorta destined to be with her. But when she's alive, Tristan is in excruciating pain. He can't be away from her without crumpling over like a broken toy.
TRISTAN:
A broken toy? Really?
GABRIEL
(ignores Tristan): Being near Scarlet makes Tristan's pain go away, but it also kills Scarlet. You see, Trsitan is the reason she keeps dying. He kinda...kills her with his presence.
TRISTAN:
Wow. Could you have made that sound more horrible.
GABRIEL:
(continues without looking at Tristan) But here's the kicker. Tristan is in love with Scarlet, so even though he tries to stay away from her to keep her safe, he can't help but want to be near her and touch her and stuff. (glares at Tristan) Which is stupid.
TRISTAN:
 You're stupid.
So who came up with your names? Do they have a specific significance in any mythology?

GABRIEL: My name means mighty or something like that. Like the archangel. Unfortunately my dark hair and dark eyes don't really fit with the angel persona.
TRISTAN: And neither does your selfish attitude or relentless need to lie.

GABRIEL: I don't lie.

TRISTAN: You lied to Scarlet.

GABRIEL: That was different.

TRISTAN: (moves on) I don't know what the hell my name means. And I don't care.

GABRIEL: It means sadness.

TRISTAN
(raises brow): How do you know?
GABRIEL: I've been alive five-hundred years, Tristan. I've done some reading. Your name means tragedy.

TRISTAN: (rolls eyes) Well that's effing perfect.

So you have a twin? Huh, What is that like?

GABRIEL: Sometimes it's cool.
TRISTAN: And sometimes it can be annoying. It depends on the century.
what's your favourite scene/line from the book?

GABRIEL: Personally, I like "A scythe? Really, dude? What are you, the grim reaper?"
TRISTAN: I'm partial to "I left my cotton candy arrows at home next to my teddy bear."
Be honest, what do you REALLY think about your twin.(You can totally mouth off about each other)

GABRIEL: I think Tristan's had a hard life and I don't envy him at all. But he could stand to smile every once in a while.
TRISTAN: Gabriel drives me crazy, but he also protects Scarlet and keeps her safe in a way I can't. So I'm grateful for him.
One thing about your twin that really annoys you

GABRIEL: His gloominess.
TRISTAN: His nonstop happiness.

Your thoughts on Scarlet (a.k.a THE girl)

GABRIEL: Scarlet is awesome. She's sweet and pretty and full of love and--
TRISTAN: She's brave and fierce. And I would die for her in a heartbeat.

GABRIEL: (blinks at his twin) Why do you always have to one-up me like that?
TRISTAN: (shrugs)
What would you do If you could rewind time?

GABRIEL: I'd stay the hell away from Raven, for starters. Sexy witches always screw you over.
TRISTAN:
SPOILER I would never have left Scarlet after proposing to her. SPOILER ENDS. I would have taken her far away and lived in hiding for the rest of our lives so no one could hurt her.
What's the last book you've read?

GABRIEL: Uh...Forbes Magazine. Does that count?
TRISTAN:
 The Count of Monte Cristo.

Rapid Fire

Twilight

GABRIEL: Why does Bella fall all the time? Does she have vertigo?
TRISTAN: I don't get the sparkly thing.

Black

GABRIEL: (shrugs)
TRISTAN: Yes.

Harry Potter

GABRIEL: Love it!
TRISTAN: (rubs the back of his neck) Magic sorta ruined my life, so forgive me if I'm not signing up for Hogwarts anytime soon.

Hot

GABRIEL: Summertime.
TRISTAN: (gives a sly smile) Scarlet.
GABRIEL: (glares at Tristan)

Wings

GABRIEL: Angels.
TRISTAN: Dragons.

Coffee

GABRIEL: The Millhouse.
TRISTAN: The best thing in the world.

T.V.

GABRIEL: Reality TV is the best thing that's happened to America in the last hundred years.
TRISTAN: I don't watch TV.
GABRIEL: Right. You're too busy pouting in your basement of perpetual sadness.
TRISTAN: Exactly.

Tristan... I love you! Would you be interested in hanging out with me sometimes ?*pretty please*

TRISTAN: Sure. As long as no witches are there. Or Ash people.

I love the sibling rivalry between the two ... don't you?

About the book
BLURB: Two years ago, Scarlet awoke in the forest alone, afraid, and unable to remember anything. Lost and confused, her life was a mystery...until she met a boy with a familiar voice.

Gabriel Archer has a voice from her past, and Scarlet's determined to remember why. She immerses herself in his life only to discover he has a brother he's kept hidden from her: Tristan Archer.

Upon meeting Tristan, Scarlet's world becomes even more muddled. While she's instinctively drawn to Gabriel, she's impossibly drawn to Tristan--and confused out of her mind. As she tries to piece together her history Scarlet realizes her past...might just be the death of her.

Short Q&A with Chelsea

1.What influences and inspirations (both literary and non-literary) did you draw from while writing Anew?
I listened to Florence + The Machine the entire time so they were my muse. I also read a lot of Cassandra Clare and C.C. Hunter while I was writing Anew.

2.Who is your favorite character in this book, and why?
Heather! She's the only non-supernatural character and I just love how annoying and snippy she is. She's easy to write (mostly because she's not dark and heavy or, you know, cursed) and I get to say whatever I want through her character because she's so irreverent. I heart Heather.

3.Tell us something about your research process and the choices you make when creating the story.
I wanted the brothers to be archers so I had to make their history go back to the 1500s. Because archery kinda went out of style in the 1600s-1700s. I also had to research the history of the fountain of youth so that their search for the fountain (and the mythology in the book) was as accurate as possible. And Scarlet is from Spain because, at the time she was born, England wasn't searching for any foutains of eternal water--but Spain was.

4.You've released quite a few Indie novels,Why did you go the indie way?
Because it's faster. Haha, I know that sounds lame. But publishing traditionally takes a long time. And I don't mean waiting to get your MS read and representated. I'm talking about once you've been signed with a publishing house and they like your book and everything is all set to go. At that point, you're still looking at 12-18 months before publication--and I just have too many stories to tell. I can't wait around for two years, you know? Haha. Honestly, though, indie has been great. I have complete control over my work and I have a loyal fanbase that no publishing house would have ever been able to provide me with. :) I love my job!

5.What next?(writing wise)
I'm finishing up book three in my series (Avow) and that will be coming out this December. After that, I'm hoping to release the sequel to Sophie & Carter (maybe in January?) And I'm also working on a YA thriller, a Valentine's love story, and another YA contemporary romance. So, we'll see!

6.Is Anew going to be a trilogy?
Yes! Book one is ANEW book two is AWRY and the third and final book will be AVOW.
