Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

My Thoughts:
I had finished reading the first two books before Mockingjay was released(approximately 5 months before it released) .Before I say anything else I would advise you to read this book ONLY. Catching Fire is pretty good but isn't even near the EPICNESS that is The Hunger Games and Mockingjay is just ...*SHUDDERS*
(Note: This review was written for a school project so it might be a little different from my usual reviews)
The Hunger Games is a fresh story set in an alternate reality, which seems so much like our own. This book has the potential to become an all time classic due to it's fresh and engrossing narrative.
The Hunger Games follows Katniss Everdeen as she selflessly takes the place of her younger sister in the 74th Annual Hunger Games. This is an annual ritual or ceremony in which two children from each of the 13 districts are put against one another and the last one standing...wins.The children do not have a choice. If you are chosen ,you fight or die.
I really liked this book.It has a gruesome and mature theme but that is what sets it apart from others. This book is a fine example of dystopian fiction.
Katniss Everdeen is a very strong female protagonist. She is selfless, strong, courageous, responsible and human.Very few people would step up and make the sacrifice she makes.I really admire her!
While at one end we have a strong, rough and tough female on the other end we have a male protagonist who is her complete opposite.
Peeta knows his chances of survival are very low but that doesn't make him loose hope.He tries not to hurt anyone, even when they're out to get him.It was nice to see that not everyone becomes a blood thirsty animal human if they are put in such a precarious situation.
This book had strong characters,a very thought provoking and engaging storyline and it introduces us to unique world.Suzzanne Collins has you begging for a sequel before the book is over.
When I finished this book, the only word that came to my mind was AMAZING and I think that there's nothing more that can be said about this book.
THANK YOU SO MUCH MY WONDERFUL friend who literally forced me to read this book NOW!
My Rating :
