Review: Unspoken

Kami Glass loves someone she’s never met . . . a boy she’s talked to in her head ever since she was born. She wasn’t silent about her imaginary friend during her childhood, and is thus a bit of an outsider in her sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale. Still, Kami hasn’t suffered too much from not fitting in. She has a best friend, runs the school newspaper, and is only occasionally caught talking to herself. Her life is in order, just the way she likes it, despite the voice in her head.

But all that changes when the Lynburns return.

The Lynburn family has owned the spectacular and sinister manor that overlooks Sorry-in-the-Vale for centuries. The mysterious twin sisters who abandoned their ancestral home a generation ago are back, along with their teenage sons, Jared and Ash, one of whom is eerily familiar to Kami. Kami is not one to shy away from the unknown—in fact, she’s determined to find answers for all the questions Sorry-in-the-Vale is suddenly posing. Who is responsible for the bloody deeds in the depths of the woods? What is her own mother hiding? And now that her imaginary friend has become a real boy, does she still love him? Does she hate him? Can she trust him?

My Thoughts:

I would NEVER have picked up this novel if Aditi hadn't highly recommended it and told me that it was funny. The blurb screams
"INSTA-LOVE/OBSESSION"

Thank you so much ADITI!

This book needs a better blurb.
There is no insta-love or obsession and this book is very funny.

The star of this novel is the female protagonist. She's so funny and sarcastic. The best thing about her is the fact that her reactions to the paranormal are normal. When she finds out that the guy she thought was in her head is real .She's horrified. (SEE NORMAL REACTION! )
Kami's quick wit and commentary makes this novel worth a read and makes this book stand out from other paranormal novels.I love Kami.

There are some scenes from Jared's point of view as well.I thought Jared was ok. I'm not a huge fan but I don't hate him. He's an intense bad guy and seemed a little stereotypical.

Frankly for the majority of the novel , the plot doesn't make an impact and I for one was so entertained with the narrative that I didn't even notice that nothing much happens for most of the novel till the last few chapters.

The secondary characters especially Cami's friends leave an impact and I really enjoyed getting to know them.

Sarah Rees Brennan is on my radar now and I'll definitely be checking out more of her novels as I love her writing style. It's fresh, funny, sarcastic and entertaining.

The worst part about this novel is the ending.
WHAT KIND OF AN ENDING IS THAT,MS. BRENNAN?? I NEED AN EXPLANATION!

I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel.

Word of advice: The hardcover is quite expensive( Highly discounted on Amazon though) so wait for the paperback or borrow from the library, but don't miss out on this one.

My Rating:
4/5

Great Fun!

  1. The book is good but for some reason I couldn't force myself to finish it. Maybe one day.

  2. I'd not have looked twice at this book, honestly. I think it's the cover... it says "chick lit" and that's not calling to my reading habits these days. But seeing from your review that this book is fun, I think I might have to try and read it. I will if I can get in in the local library (good luck to me... that's going to be difficult) or if it can be kindle-loaned from some friend who does own it.

    Thanks for sharing!

  4. I got to hear Sarah Rees Brennan speak this past weekend a couple of times at the Y'allfest in Charleston, SC. Let me tell you, the girl is crazy pants. She is incredibly funny and incredibly wild. I just had this feeling that her books would have at least some humor in them. Your review just proved me right. I really can't wait to read this book, and it makes me even more excited for it knowing that there is NO insta-love! Yeehaw! Thanks for the review!

  7. I absolutely adored this book! I also was kind of medium about Jared I didn't hate or love him, but seeing all he has been through I can't imagine him acting a different way. Hopefully you come to like him more in the next book!
