Review: Happy Birthday to Me by Brian Rowe

Happy Birthday to Me (Birthday Trilogy #1)
Seventeen-year-old Cameron Martin has a huge problem: he’s aging a whole year of his life with each passing day!

High school is hard enough; imagine rapidly aging from seventeen to seventy in a matter of weeks, with no logical explanation, and with prom, graduation, and the state championship basketball game all on the horizon. That’s what happens to Cameron, a popular pretty boy who's never had to face a day looking anything but perfect.

All Cameron wants to do is go back to normal, but no one, not even the best doctors, can diagnose his condition. When he finds love with a mysterious young woman, however, he realizes his only hope for survival might be with the one person who started his condition in the first place...

My Thoughts:

I was really fascinated by the blurb of this book.It reminded me a little of The curious case of Benjamen Button and I couldn't wait to start reading it....

The Positives

The concept
The concept of this book is very unique. A book based on an aging disease is something I've never read before and it was written in a very different way!

Realistic

This book was so realistic. Even though it had some unrealistic elements the characters seemed so real and the situations through not very nice were so ... Real .That even when gross things were happening all I could think of was.... This could really happen one day!

The Negatives

Couldn't connect with characters
I just couldn't connect with the characters! Cameron is real but I just couldn't care for him.I guess it could have something to do with the fact that I just thought he deserved what was coming to him! Also Liesel has to be one of the weird character ... I thought she was pretty cool in the start but towards the end she seemed a little too gullible for me!
Also I really hated Cameron's family (except for his sister)

Relationships

The relationship Cameron has with other people are too weird! His father clearly needs to talk to a therapist! And he really needs to ditch his best friend! I wish he would!

*SPOILER*
Also, Liesel ... he tells you that he loves you and he gives you absolutely no good reason for his love(HE's clearly still recovering from a horrible relationship) and you believe him?? Seriously?? *spoiler ends*

Overall, this book had huge potential and a lot of people might really enjoy it but it just wasn't for me!

My Rating:
2/5

  1. I really enjoyed the overall concept of this one as well and thought some of the scenes with his family toward the end were moving, but I had some definite issues as well. Like you, I didn't quite connect to Cameron, and there were a couple scenes with his mom and the strange librarian that pretty much scarred me for life:) Thanks for the review!
