Review: Sam Cruz's Infallible Guide To Getting Girls + GIVEAWAY

Sam Cruz's Infallible Guide to Getting Girls
Blurb:
Why the hell can’t chicks be more like guys?

That question plagues high school senior Sam Cruz. Sam is perfectly happy being a player. He just wishes girls wouldn’t change the game from sex to relationships. It makes him look like an asshole. But when Sam’s best friend, Ally Klinger, gets dumped, she begs him to transform her into someone who can screw around then screw off. No risk of heartbreak that way. It’s Sam’s chance to create the perfect female AND cheer up his best friend. Armed with Sam’s Three Step Guide to Backseat Success, Ally gets the game better than Sam thought she would and before long, Sam has his wish: the female version of himself. Too bad it’s driving him nuts. Told from Sam’s and Ally's alternating POVs, Sam Cruz’s Infallible Guide to Getting Girls is a fast-paced romantic comedy that follows these teens as they navigate the minefield of sex, love, and friendship.

This book contains strong language, drinking, euphemisms, and lots of “bow chicka wow wow."

NOTE: Not for Young Readers

Now before I start my review I want to make one thing very clear ,there is a lot of mature content in this novel.Language, sexual content etc. but this did not affect my review of this novel. Frankly I'm surprised this book is classified as YA.

The author in an interview on this blog answered my question regarding the amount of content in her novel( here's an excerpt from the interview .I had to ask this question after reading the book)

There is quite a lot of sexual content in your novel and it's still classified as YA,you think you will lose out on some readers because of this?

Yes. The book was always intended for older teen readers and into an adult audience, but even so, I knew it was going to alienate some people. The decision to use sexual content to the extent I did, was not a decision I made lightly. I’m a mom and can appreciate people’s concerns. Ultimately though, I truly believe that Sam’s and Ally’s journeys demanded a frank, forthright and funny dialogue around sex.
That to achieve an emotional honesty and get them to their end point of growth, which is a place of love and heightened intimacy on all levels with each other, they had to go through experiencing and experimenting with this very specific, narrow intimacy. Which was sex.
This story required it. My next one doesn’t. I have no interest in just writing sex for sex’ sake or some kind of added titillation or shock because I’m writing YA. It has to be necessary to the characters’ journey. And for this book, to do otherwise, would have meant censoring myself and the story simply for the sake of the age of my intended audience. That, to me, would have been condescending and wrong.

My review

I really enjoyed this novel. There were parts when the writing was a little choppy and that frustrated me a little bit but I enjoyed this book.I've never read a book like this before with teen characters that don't censor themselves at all (It was a little bit of a shock for me at first)

Sam is a character that really frustrated me in the beginning *read first chapter* but his relationship  friendship with Ally was his best quality and I actually started liking him after seeing how great he was with her.Sam has a lot of baggage but he's upfront about it.Any girl 'getting involved' with him is aware about how things are going to end (They still get frustrated when things end though )

Ally was a character that really surprised me.I thought I had her figured out in the beginning and then BAM she said and did some stuff I couldn't have predicted at all.I love the fact that she's such great friends with Sam and I was fascinated with the fact that she was so cool with Sam's casanova personality.

This book was funny and I was smiling throughout the novel.

Overall this is a light and fun read that makes you smile in parts and shocks you in others. The ending was a little predictable but I enjoyed the fact that it  light, fun and predictable in parts.

My Rating :
3.5/5

Fun!

  1. Suprisingly, I loved this book. Read it in one sitting and just adored it. It was like watching a cheesy R rated coming of age college movie. I was a little shocked by Sam's first sexual encounter in chapter 1 but quickly realized that was just the nature of this book. It's not really descriptive at all, unlike Beautiful Disaster, which I just finished reading and I think was technically considered YA. But I totally agree that Sam Cruz's is a fun read that should probably be kept out of the younger one's hands!

  3. I haven't heard of this book before! I can't tell I'd get frustrated with Sam teaching Ally how to have sex while avoiding relationships because that's just a mindset I personally struggle with, but I'm still curious as to what happens, and I kind of like that the ending is predictable. I'm hoping it's predictable in the way I want it to be predictable! Thanks for the recommendation:)

  4. I think I'd read this for the funny and uncensored teens can be hilarious. I'm glad you included that bit about why the author let there be so much sex. If it's important to the storyline it's okay, but if it's just there just cause I don't usually care for that much. Thanks for the great review!
